AutoPlan - ICBC Car Insurance
By law, any vehicle registered and driven or parked on public streets in British Columbia must purchase ICBC's basic insurance package from an independent broker. This basic coverage, called Autoplan, includes protection from third party legal liability, under-insured motorist protection, accident benefits, hit-and-run protection, and inverse liability.
Generally, Basic Autoplan protects you personally in five ways:
Basic Autoplan does not cover you outside Canada and the United States, nor does it cover replacement of or repairs to your vehicle.
Most B.C. motorists buy extra coverage for their vehicles, themselves, and equipment they've added to their vehicles. This can be purchased through ICBC or private insurance. It may include collision, comprehensive, vehicle in storage, replacement cost coverage, collector & vintage vehicles, extended third-party legal liability, loss of use, etc. In setting premiums, ICBC does not discriminate on the basis of age, sex or marital status and discounts are provided based on the number of years that a driver has been claims free. The Corporation collects insurance premiums from more than 2.6 million motorists and invests these premiums to provide insurance benefits for clients and victims of crashes. The ICBC also competes with other car insurance companies by offering extended third party legal liability and other optional insurance coverages such as collision and comprehensive coverages. Basic and Optional Autoplan insurance polices are available through Autoplan brokers throughout B.C. Autoplan brokers are insurance brokers who have been authorized by the ICBC to sell the Autoplan coverage.
